No-Spend Challenge: How to Make It Work

A no-spend challenge is a set period, like a weekend, a week or a whole month, where you only spend money on essentials. It is a great way to break autopilot spending habits, save money quickly and discover what you actually value. And it can be surprisingly fun.

Step 1: Choose your time frame

New to it? Start with a no-spend weekend or week. Once you feel confident, try a full no-spend month. Pick a period without big birthdays or holidays, so it feels realistic.

Step 2: Set your rules

Write down what counts as essential and what does not. For example:

Allowed: rent, bills, groceries, transport to work, medicine and planned debt payments.

Not allowed: takeaway, coffee out, clothes, beauty products, home decor, online shopping and impulse buys.

You can make your own exceptions, like one planned coffee with a friend. The point is to decide in advance.

Step 3: Set a goal for the money you save

Challenges stick better with a purpose. Decide where the saved money will go: your emergency fund, a debt payment or a savings goal.

Step 4: Prepare

  • Plan your meals and do one grocery shop. See our grocery saving tips.
  • Unsubscribe from shopping emails and log out of shopping apps.
  • Tell a friend, or invite them to join you.

Free things to do instead

  • Walks, picnics and free museum days.
  • Movie nights at home with friends.
  • Library books, audiobooks and podcasts.
  • A home spa evening with products you already own.
  • Finally finishing that craft or project in your drawer.

Our list of free self care ideas has plenty more.

What to do if you slip

You bought a coffee on day four? That is fine. Note what triggered it, then carry on. A slip does not cancel the challenge, and learning your triggers is one of the most valuable parts.
